boygenius debut first full length album, the record

Boygenius is an American indie rock supergroup formed in 2018 by Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. Their self-titled debut EP was written and recorded at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. On January 18, 2023, the band announced their debut studio album, The Record, which was released on March 31 to wide critical acclaim.

Background and release

Rumours about a debut album from Boygenius began spreading in late 2022, after the trio were spotted in a photoshoot together in November 2022 and following the announcement that Boygenius will play on the 2023 Coachella lineup. On January 18, 2023, Boygenius announced the album, along with the release of three lead singles, "$20", "Emily I'm Sorry", and "True Blue". On March 1, 2023, Boygenius released the album's fourth single "Not Strong Enough", along with an accompanying music video edited by Bridgers' brother Jackson Bridgers.

The album was produced by Dave Fridmann, who has previously worked with bands such as The Flaming Lips, MGMT, and Tame Impala. It was recorded at Fridmann's Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York.

Composition

The Record is a 12-track album that runs for a total of 42 minutes and 18 seconds. The album's sound has been described as indie rock, folk, and chamber pop. The album's lyrics are often personal and introspective, dealing with themes such as love, loss, and self-doubt.

The Record

A melancholic perspective on friendship, love and loss, Bridgers, Baker and Dacus’ lyricism delves into familiarity we’ve all submitted ourselves to. This strong trio of singer-storytellers compliment one another with their frequently heartbreaking, diary-like candidness on the understatedly named The Record. Their stunningly clear vocals mix in folky and mournful harmony to create both upbeat and slow melodies for anytime of the day.

Here are some of the reviews of the album:

  • "The Record is a stunning debut from a supergroup that's already one of the best things in indie rock." - Pitchfork

  • "The Record is a powerful and moving collection of songs." - Rolling Stone

  • "A must-listen for fans of indie rock." - The Guardian

  • "A classic in the years to come." - NME

Our favourite: Letter to an old poet. Anti-curse is a close second.

If you're a fan of indie rock, or if you're just looking for some great music, then I highly recommend checking out Boygenius' The Record. It's an album that will stay with you long after the final note has faded away.
