Who Showed Up to the Golden Globes?

The 78th Golden Globes took place on Monday night, and with it was a diverse range of fashion premiering both in quarantine and on the red carpet.

While the awards show is used as a platform to honor those in both film and television, the red carpet has long since served as a medium for celebrities to portray their own creativity in fashion.

Some stylistic choices fell flat this year, with Margot Robbie leading the pack. Robbie wore a Chanel dress that felt more simple than anything, leaving viewers feeling as though maybe one risk that didn’t pay off would be better than no risk at all.

Awkwafina’s look also felt unfinished, in her Gucci floor-length gown that featured tulle, mesh, abstract lines and a bow. While her dress had many elements, none of them necessarily worked as a whole piece, thus earning her a spot on the most disappointing looks of the night.

Maya Rudolph featured a Valentino look which resembled a cape with floral patterns on it. Unfortunately, the seams didn’t line up and the loud red made this look feel more like a curtain than anything.

Gal Gadot wore Givenchy, a white flowing dress that appeared lower in the back with chiffon-style sleeves. This ultimately did not serve Gadot, as it resembled more of a department store dress than anything.

Some honorable mentions for best looks of the night are Elle Fanning in an icy blue Gucci dress, and both Nicola Coughlan and Rosamund Pike in Molly Goddard. Coughlan and Pike both went with huge tulle silhouettes, something that they each styled individually with their own flair.

Julia Garner made an appearance in a loose-silhouetted Prada dress which felt reminiscent of Old Hollywood glamour, something Garner easily pulls off. Andra Day wore a gorgeous cream-colored gown from Chanel Haute Couture. The gown, which featured crochet and tulle, was a great way to demonstrate how Chanel should be worn, not just how it can be.

Anya Taylor Joy made headlines with her lavish green look, a set from Christian Dior. Right down to the shoes, Joy matched her entire outfit together, topping it off with a beautiful deep green robe with exaggerated sleeves.

By far, however, the best-dressed pair of the night both wore Valentino Couture: Dan Levy and Cynthia Erivo.

Dan Levy wore a gorgeous bright suit with a mock turtleneck and platform shoes, embellished with sequins and shine. While there were basic suits of the night (from men and women alike) it was this look that set Levy apart from others on the red carpet.

Erivo opted for an enthralling neon green dress, which held a stiff structure and flowed out after her waist. The harsh construction of the dress was offset with dainty gloves, creating a look that stole the show entirely and stopped viewers in their tracks.

Within moments of making her debut on the red carpet, Erivo was trending on Twitter as her dress picked up traction.

This is a great representation of the importance of upholding fashion standards in a pandemic, and an even better example of Erivo paving the way for others to do so at the next show.
