What’s New Doctor Who

British Sci-Fi franchise, ‘Doctor Who’ is truly bigger on the inside. With over 800 TV episodes spanning 14 different regenerations of the Doctor, multiple spin-off series, a robust comic-book collection, a huge library of audio plays and multiple video games it is safe to say there is something for everyone. The stories blend classic alien-adventure sci-fi with history as the Doctor travels in their time-traveling-teleporter-ship called the TARDIS.

The iconic brand features such a wide range of mediums, storytellers, actors, tones, and content that every fan has something to enjoy (even if other parts aren’t appealing). The year 2021 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for ‘Doctor Who’ fans.

Ninth Doctor Audio Adventures Featuring Christopher Eccleston

Eccleston lives up to expectations with a winning performance.

Big Finish Productions has recently released the first of three episodes featuring Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor. Written by Nicholas Briggs, the stories travel to ‘Piccadilly Circus in 1959, Belgium 1815 and far-flung future worlds’ as Nine scrambles to save the day.

The first episode, ‘Sphere of Freedom’, is delightful in its nostalgia and ingenuity. Straight away, the Doctor’s voice welcomes the listener right back into the grungy TARDIS. The story takes place after the Time War and before Rose. The Doctor’s plan to bring down the evil Immersive Games business empire with companion Nova (Camilla Beeput) goes sideways, but they struggle to control the Time Eddies when Nova is swept away. From here the Doctor must save the day while investigating a new mystery: who is Audry? Throughout the episode, the Doctor spends an awfully long time explaining past events to people (read: the listener) which makes for a slow episode. However, Eccleston lives up to expectations with a winning performance. Is the episode longer than it needs to be? Yes. Do I mind? As of right now, no, because hearing a Nine adventure is such a blessing. That said, I hope the following 90 minutes pick up the pace.

Digital, CD and vinyl copies can be purchased on the Big Finish website.

‘Doctor Who’ Series 13 Starring Jodie Whittaker

Season 13 features the Thirteenth Doctor played by Jodie Whittaker accompanied by Yaz (Mandeep Gill). There is a new face destined for the TARDIS, John Bishop is joining the team as the mysterious Dan. Bishop has been effervescent in his anticipation for Dan’s role with the Doctor, but his interviews are tight-lipped about this tantalizing new character. Bishop’s enthusiasm is contagious though, in a statement after his character’s announcement he gushes, "It's an absolute dream come true to be joining Doctor Who and I couldn't wish for better company than Jodie and Mandeep." Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, series 13 cast and crew have been filming tirelessly. BBC is optimistic about a 2021 release but has made no promises.

A new season of ‘Doctor Who’ raises (as always) speculation of regeneration and the upcoming casting announcement for the title role. Although BBC has made no announcements on the subject, it is Whittaker’s third season.

Missy Comic Book Series

Titan Comics has released the first two graphic novels featuring The Doctor’s arch-nemesis Missy. The esteemed team of writer Jody Houser, illustrator Roberta Ingranata and colorist Enrica Angiolini have the galaxy to work with as the diabolical Missy tries to wreak havoc on her enemies.

That’s not all folks, Missy has roped in fan favorites River Song and The Master for her book two plot. It remains to be seen, but this unlikely trio may become one of my favorite ‘Doctor Who’ character combinations. A story featuring one of the Doctor’s most knifing and charming adversaries is almost too good to be true. By airing this plot with gorgeous art it looks like a gold star for BBC and the Doctor Who franchise.

The first two books are on sale now, so jump on the bandwagon while it’s leaving the station.
