Player Profile: Kysre Gondrezick

As we have now reached the midway mark of the WNBA season it’s time to catch up with the 4th overall pick Kysre Gondrezick.

Gondrezick hasn’t played very much in her rookie season, only averaging 1.9 points a game in nine minutes a game. However, she has shown flashes here and there that she belongs in this league. As her game is still developing and getting adjusted to the next level there is bound to be some shooting woes as she is currently shooting 28 percent from the field. She doesn’t let that stop her as she displays fearlessness whenever she steps onto the court. Similar to Atlanta Hawks forward Cameron Reddish, she has the talent to flourish at this level but it is all about putting it all together to be able to be a consistent contributor to her team.

Most during the draft process didn’t have Gondrezick even going in the first round despite going top five. Gondrezick, being 5’9” can play both ends and has given an effort on that end in limited minutes. That being said will give her more leeway with the coaching staff as she has the potential to be a scorer as well as she displayed in college. She has shown the ability to finish with her left and shoot the deep ball with confidence as she showed in the Fever’s loss against the Las Vegas Aces in May as she tallied eight points, 75% from the field and 100% from behind the arc. Sitting towards the bottom of the league in three-point shooting, having someone who has the capability and guts to shoot could be exactly what is needed for this team. Growing pains for young players are needed if they are to truly blossom.

Sitting last in their conference it could be said that Coach Marianne Stanley will be looking to shake things up going into the second half of the season to see if they can improve in any areas as this is her second season coaching the team while playing some of the younger talent on the roster. This could be the answer as they could give the spark to the veterans and vice versa to be able to turn this season around, and possibly make a push for the playoffs.

As the Fever’s record sits at 4-16 on the season it welcoming to know you have someone waiting in the reins as it will be up to Tamika Catchings and the rest of the front office to put pieces around the current regime of players including Gondrezick to maximize her potential and make good on their investment in the number four overall selection in this year’s draft. As they recently waived their pick from the previous year Lauren Cox because of lack of minutes for her they do not want to repeat the same process with Gondrezick as she has shown promise for a team that hasn’t seen the postseason since 2016.
