Kpop Artist of the Week: Twice

By Susan Egbert

Twice is a nine-member girl group who debuted under JYP Entertainment in Oct. 2015. What is unique about this girl group is they were formed through a survival show ‘Sixteen.’ On top of having to train (one of the members trained for 10 years), these girls had to compete against each other and other contestants in the show.

Twice had a comeback with their second full album “Eyes Wide Open” on Oct. 26, 2020. This album is to hope to get a crack at the US market. The physical album has 3 versions: "Story", "Style" and "Retro". The "Story" version continues from their 9th mini-album in the view of the world. "Style" version shows the main style concept of the album. "Retro" version shows members in different retro-style photos.

Review of the music video

JYP went with a different concept that has not been seen before with Twice. It seems as though it is a bit more mature compared to their other music videos which give a perspective that these girls wanting to get out of their “young girl” shell. Not unheard of in Kpop girl groups that start off with a cute concept but then go on to more mature concepts. There’s definitely a lot of imagery surrounding their girls in both the individual shots and choreography shots.

The music video starts out with a red flower in a fantasy-like setting. What brought more of an elegance factor into this video is the girls being in different settings. Nayeon is wearing a flashy golden dress in a subway.  Mina is in a white room with a white dress. Sana is wearing a floral dress walking up a terrain. Jeongyeon is sporting a more androgynous style shot with her riding a motorcycle. Jihyo is in a room with cups of water and a stormy background. These were the members a bit more focused while members like Momo, Chaeyeoung and Dahyun were using a simple floral background.

Review of the performance

Twice’s performances were not on Youtube until around Oct. 29th (through music shows like MBC MusicBank, M!Countdown, and Show Countdown). What was said is that one of the members (Jeongyeon) is not participating in the performances due to her health, but all the respect for her taking the time to heal. Nice to see in the choreography is the fact that the girls are not afraid to have the place where Jeongyeon is at. Also, Chaeyeong was the one who took over her parts in the beginning while Jihyo took the lines towards the end of the performance.  While they will be performing for a few more weeks on various music show programs, the girls’ outfits seem to be rather consistent with the outfits that are in the music video when they are dancing in the subway.
