How to Flip Your Closet in Time for Spring
Common clothes in each article: Denim, white button-downs, statement jackets (trench, shirt jacket, statement jacket)
Emphasis on transitional clothing: Versatile pieces that can be layered, broken down for warmer weather and built up if need be (for the chilly mornings, cold nights, etc.)
While we continue to transition into spring, most of us turn to our closets in order to figure out how to adapt our winter clothes to the warmer weather. Albeit hard, and sometimes frustrating, there are a few basic pieces to keep in mind as you flip your closet that may help alleviate some of the stress that stems from feeling like you have a lack of options.
It’s important to keep in mind that this is different from cleaning out your closet, although changing your closet depending on the season and organizing the clothes you have can go hand in hand.
When it comes to dressing for fickle weather, layers are always a safe bet. Transitioning from winter to spring often means cold mornings, warm afternoons and even colder nights. In order to dress for every phase of the day, layers ensure that you can be as comfortable and cute as the weather calls for (whatever that may be).
A white button-up shirt can be a staple in a seasonally challenged closet. An article from WhoWhatWear dubs the white button-up as a “timeless silhouette,” making this article of clothing a great transitional piece for your winter-to-spring closet.
Versatility during a seasonal closet change is important, and white button-ups are perfect for the different ways they can be dressed up or down depending on the look. In an article from Refinery29 titled “16 Wardrobe Essentials For Your Spring Awakening,” author Marissa Rosenblum argues that a white button-up is the easiest way to save a look.
“You will never regret adding a quality white shirt to your wardrobe,” Rosenblum wrote.
Another piece of clothing that you will always need regardless of the season is jeans. Denim is one of the core parts of a closet, and it’s something that most everyone has.
Although the verdict is still out on whether or not skinny jeans are still cool, classic denim is still essential for any closet. Depending on the wash, rise or cut, denim can be worn to fit any aesthetic. When it comes to jeans, it’s all preferential; Anything will look good if it’s something you feel good in.
What some may argue is the hardest part of dressing for spring is figuring out whether or not to wear a jacket. Once you get that out of the way, the even harder question is: What jacket do I wear?
When it comes to jackets, usually the weather dictates your choices. However, when your days are spent dodging the weather in the mornings and wishing you had more time to spend outside during the afternoon it can be hard to decide what to wear.
For spring, it’s better to layer and go with a lighter jacket than to rely on a heavier jacket that will almost assuredly get hot later in the day. Since lighter jackets can be a more essential part of a look, it’s best to always have at least one statement jacket in your closet that you can wear over your outfits in the spring.
This can be a denim jacket, a trench coat, a light leather jacket, or even a cardigan. Looking for statement jackets doesn’t have to be as hard as it sounds; Mostly it’s just looking for a lighter jacket that you’re wearing to accentuate your look (not just keep you warm).
Lastly, white sneakers might seem like a basic choice but they never go out of a style for a reason. White sneakers can complement almost any outfit, from dressing down a dress to dressing up some leggings. Anybody who gets white sneakers understands why they’re so significant in any closet, and it’s specifically because of their versatility.
All of these pieces are great rules to go by when you’re transitioning your closet from winter to spring. Not only are they all common and easy to come by, but they’re also all great for diverse aesthetics in any one closet.
Part of dressing for the new season is trying new things. While the leaves change, so should our style! Flipping your closet from any season can be so detrimental because it helps against the mentality of nothing ever-changing.
By learning how to dress up new pieces, or adding basics to your collection that you’ve never had, it all goes toward attributing to your own change as you grow⎯ just like the flowers outside as we say goodbye to winter and old times past.
