The Return of Becky Lynch with Charlotte Flair

With Summerslam in the rearview mirror, WWE is looking to move forward to the next pay-per-view, Extreme Rules. However, WWE once again couldn’t help themselves again at Summerslam with the results of the two women’s titles matches. Becky Lynch made her big return after being out due to pregnancy for 15 months.

In her return, she squashed Bianca Belair in 26 seconds to become Smackdown Women’s champion once again. While the decision to have Lynch win was expected, the way they put the title back on Lynch is the problem. For just about the past year, the WWE has built up Belair as the next big star of the women’s division. She defeated the likes of Sasha Banks and Bayley at pay-per-views, yet WWE booked her like she was inferior to Lynch. Realistically in the rematch between the two, Belair doesn’t look to have a chance. I do agree that Becky Lynch should've become champion once again, it should've been in a decisive match and not a 26-second match.

At Summerslam, Charlotte Flair once again won the Raw Women’s Championship by making Nikki ASH tap out to the figure four. The match itself was great, the result is what a lot of people have a huge problem with. It became obvious years ago, that WWE is setting Flair up to at the very least match her father in title reigns, however, this goal has set interfered with people’s title reigns and kept the title off of wrestlers who should have it.

These two decisions are symbolic of a bigger issue, WWE keeps using the Four Horsewomen as their default option to carry the titles when other wrestlers should be holding them. I thought they turned the corner when Rhea Ripley and Belair won the women’s championship belts at WrestleMania. That was the first time since Carmella in 2018 had held the Smackdown Women’s Championship. This was also the first time since 2018 that neither women’s championship was held by a member of the Four Horsewomen. WWE needs to stop relying on those four, and allow some new talent to grow. A wrestler like Liv Morgan has been waiting for her opportunity to go for the Women’s championship, but with the return of Lynch, she is pushed back even further now due to the feud between Belair and Lynch that’s going to take place. While on Raw two first-time champions got an opportunity to hold the gold and both of them had their runs ended prematurely by Flair this year.
