Kansas City Chiefs Extend HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach
After an impressive run that eventually led to a Lombardi trophy, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to win.
Heading into the offseason with hopes to maintain their Super Bowl roster, there was some wonder as to how the Chiefs could pull it off. The Chiefs brought back a few key defensive players in the form of a franchise tag for defensive tackle Chris Jones and a new contract for cornerback Breshaud Breeland.
At the end of free agency, the Chiefs infamously had $177 in salary cap. Not $177,000,000. Not $177,000. One hundred and seventy seven dollars. Many were wondering how they were going to be able to have any money to ensure their future. On the horizon, they were going to have to extend Chris Jones sooner rather than later, Travis Kelce’s contract was nearing its end, as was Tyreek Hill’s, and they still had to extended Super Bowl MVP, and face of the NFL, Patrick Mahomes.
Magically, somehow the Chiefs were able to pull it off. They were able to free up enough money to give Patrick Mahomes the biggest contract in sports history with a 10-year $503 million contract. They followed that up by extending Chris Jones a 4-year $80 million dollar deal. No one knew where the money was coming from. And then, on August 14th, the Chiefs also extended Travis Kelce with a 4-year $57 million deal. Again, no one knew how the Chiefs went from having $175 in cap space to being able to extend three of their star players while making them some of the highest paid players at their respective positions.
For his magical efforts, the Chiefs decided to extend General Manager Brett Veach with a new 6-year deal, keeping him with the team until 2025. The Chiefs also decided to lock up Head Coach Andy Reid to a 6-year deal as well, making sure that both will be with the Chiefs for the foreseeable future.
Fresh off of a Super Bowl victory, the Chiefs found a way to continue their winning into the offseason. They were able tolock down their star players for a long time and make sure that they keep the two who are responsible for the all of their success. We will see if the Chiefs are strapped for cap in a few years because of these contracts that they handed out, but for now we will have to wait and see if the Chiefs are able to make it to the promise land two years in a row.
