Disco Elysium Final Cut
There has been a murder. You are a detective tasked to solve the case. Or, that's what you have been told at least. You see, you have lost your memory and have no idea where you are or even WHO you are. This is Disco Elysium.
Disco Elysium was developed and published by ZA/UM, a company founded in Estonia, and later moved to London. The writer Robert Kurvitz, after falling into a deep depression with the failure of his most recent book, wanted to write a semi-realistic and more modern take on an RPG inspired by 70's cop shows.
In Disco Elysium, you play the role of a detective who wakes up in the city of Revechole, a city still recovering from war from years past, with no memory of getting there or who you are. You meet up with a man claiming to be your partner on a murder case and this is where the story begins. The narrative is told through interrogations and talking to the locals to see what happened, and your own psyche talking to you, telling you what to think and do. You have the freedom to be whatever detective you choose to be with 24 different skills you can improve upon.
How this game differs from more traditional RPGs is it isn't really combat-based at all. All of the character development and story building comes from the connections you have with your partner and the Revechole locals. When I first started playing, it was a lot of reading, BUT as of March 20th, 2021 you can now play Disco Elysium: The Final Cut which makes the game fully voiced, and it is incredible!
Disco Elysium originally released in October of 2019, and it hit the ground at a dead sprint. Right out the gate it was given 10/10 across the board and won upwards of seven awards in the first year of its release including The Game Awards best roleplaying game and best narrative. With the release of the Final Cut update, that momentum hasn't slowed one bit. It always makes me happy to see an indie studio achieve such great success for working on something they truly loved instead of being forced to make.
You can play Disco Elysium: The Final Cut on all major platforms now, and I encourage you to give it a try. The story is so engaging, the world feels lived in and you feel connected to all people who inhabit it. With the new fully voiced dialogue, it just brings a whole new level to an already incredible game. Give it a try if you can, and as always, stay safe and keep gaming.
