A Look at the NCAA Softball Rule Changes for the 2021-22' Year

The new rules and changes created for the 2021-22’ year have put a lot of emphasis on altering rules to ensure that the game is fair for all players. Most of the rules that have been changed and/or added were to ensure that e there are consequences if players, coaches or any team personnel fail to follow the rules or regulations that have been set by the NCAA.

Here are some of the important rule changes that softball players and fans must familiarize themselves with before the start of the season:

When it comes to equipment, softball barrel compression testing is now required to be conducted prior to the start of each tournament, doubleheader or single midweek game during the regular season. Pitchers are now able to begin their stride (non-pivot) foot behind the pitcher’s plate and are now required to take signals while on the pitcher's plate.

When it comes to changes with the uniforms for softball players, visible undergarments are required to contrast with the color of the ball to help with visibility

If an athlete, coach or team personnel violates any sort of ejection/suspension given and it is discovered after the game/event, it will result in a two-game suspension for a student-athlete or team personnel. For head coaches, violations will result in a four-game suspension.

Other Changes include attachments, such as screening, flags, pennants, etc., now are prohibited from being added to the foul side of the pole. While using equipment to make noise is no longer allowed.

The new rules and adjustments that have been created for softball by the NCAA seem to put a lot of focus on regulations for players, coaches, etc.

A rule that comes across as interesting is that if players are wearing visible undergarments that it has to contrast with the color of the ball. It comes across as somewhat of a little overbearing when you think about how a player could be punished based on the color of their undergarment if visible.

It is clear that the NCAA has been putting a lot of time and focus on ensuring that players have very specific rules in regards to clothing, uniform, and any apparel.
